Development of the Field Ion-scanning Tunneling Microscope and Its Applications
A scanning tunneling microscope (STM) equipped with a field ion microscope (FIM) which operates at room temperature has been constructed and operated successfully to obtain atomically resolved STM images with 100% reproducibility. This instrument, which we call the FI-STM, has been employed for the quantitative study of the Si(100) "2xn" phase.

Experiments with a low-resolution scanning transmission ion microscope, using hydrogen ions from a field ionization source, indicate that it will be feasible by this approach to aim at high-resolution ion microscopy. Micrographs of unstained biological specimens have been obtained by critical range absorption of a 55 keV hydrogen ion beam at a resolution of 2000 A.

Using a unique trial function we perform an accurate calculation of the ground state 1σg of the hydrogenic molecular ion H + 2 in a constant uniform magnetic field ranging 0 − 10 G.
